Tom Von Essen On September 11 – 2001 he and New York’s Bravest were at Ground Zero within minutes – saving thousands of lives and facing unimaginable obstacles and challenges in two of the tallest buildings in the world. Perhaps no one knows more the bravery and tragic losses of New York’s finest on the fateful day than Tom Von Essen. Born in Brooklyn – he served active duty in the United States Naval Submarine Service and was stationed at the submarine base in Groton – Connecticut. He was appointed the 30th Fire Commissioner of the City of New York by Mayor Giuliani. In 2002 he was made a member of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.
