Senator Rand Paul’s grilling of Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institutes of Health, drew eyebrows this past week. The Kentucky Senator questioned the NIH’s funding of Chinese viral research, Fauci’s refusal to consider the lab-leak theory, as well as the hesitancy of US health officials to lift mask orders even as vaccination rates climb. A physician himself, Paul has been a long-time critic of what he perceives as public theater taking the place of public health.

Senator Paul joined The Cats Roundtable on Sunday to reiterate Fauci and other medical experts have not been transparent with the American people over the course of the pandemic,  emphasizing those medical leaders who continue to buck the science have to be held accountable.

“It’s just disappointing that it’s taken him three or four months to actually decide to follow the science,” Paul said regretfully, accusing Fauci of playing “for theater” before the science and describing the month-long refusal to change mask guidelines as “ridiculous.”

“What we need to do is get the government to wake up, leave us alone,” Paul demanded, particularly rebuking guidelines targeted at children.

“There’s no evidence that kids are getting sick from this disease or that they’re transmitting it very well, and right now the numbers, the daily numbers of Covid, have plummeted,” Paul told The Cats Roundtable.

When Americans needed it the most, Paul believed medical leaders like Fauci have failed to do the simplest task: to tell the truth.   Whether it’s the impact of natural immunity to the early-adoption of life-saving steroids and therapies, or the confusion around mask mandates and the final tally of the official death-toll, Paul believes partisanship and government overreach have taken the priority in this pandemic.

“I think it’s very important the government not tell us things to do, force mandates on us, without first having the burden of proving these mandates are actually helping the public health,” Paul told The Cats Roundtable.

For instance, Biden announced a July 4th return to normalcy, but the real narrative is hidden under the spin.  Paul was quick to point out “reasonable” state governments had opened up long ago, while Democratic governors wield emergency power, now in defiance of updated guidelines.

“The bottom line is almost none of the things that government told us to do changed the trajectory of this at all,” Paul said. “The only thing that finally changed the trajectory and limited the virus spread was the vaccine and natural immunity.”

And then there’s the lab-leak theory, dismissed outright by Dr. Fauci for reasons, as the months have progressed, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to explain.  In the least, the lack of evidence for the official explanation touted by China—that the virus spread from bats to humans through an intermediary host—has not been proven.  This has become especially apparent as the Wuhan lab at the center of the discussion has had a history of poor handling of deadly viruses, while also receiving funding, despite Fauci’s denials, from the NIH.

“I think there is a great deal of evidence that the Chinese lab has not been careful with handling very dangerous viruses,” Paul told The Cats Roundtable, adding he was seeking legislation that would pull funding used to “juice up these super viruses” because of the danger it poses now, and in the future.

Paul’s attempt to crack open the mysticism and irregularities in the message around the pandemic is a microcosm of the conflict at play between Americans and their government.  Whether it be missteps in public health messaging, or missteps in spending—when the bill comes do, it’ll be the every day American footing the debt, with their lives and livelihoods.

“We have to be aware though that your government is borrowing more money than they’ve ever borrowed in their history,” Paul told The Cats Roundtable, adding he was worried inflation was knocking at the door.  “And that this alarming amount of borrowing may well devalue the currency, meaning prices may rise.”
