About Newt Gingrich

Newt Gingrich is the former Speaker of the House of Representatives. After the 1994 mid-term elections, Newt Gingrich became the first Republican Speaker of the House in 40 years. While he was House speaker, the House enacted welfare reform, passed a capital gains tax cut in 1997, and in 1998 passed the first balanced budget since 1969. Most of the legislative items in his well-publicized “Contract with America” were passed by the House and many became law. Since leaving the House, Gingrich has remained active in public policy debates and works as a political consultant and network political analyst. Prior to entering Congress, Mr. Gingrich was a history professor. Speaker Gingrich has a new project which is to educate America and especially young people about our first President George Washington. Mr. Gingrich is the author of several books.
