Charles E. Schmidt was elected national commander of the 2.2 million-member American Legion in 2016 during the 98th national convention of America’s largest veterans organization.  Schmidt enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1965 and served on active duty until his retirement in 1993. While serving in the Air Force, Schmit received medals of honor too long to list here. The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization.
