As the coronavirus reaches its critical mass in some states, restrictions are beginning to lift in others. In Georgia, some nonessential businesses were allowed to reopen this Friday, with a dozen other states announcing their first steps towards reopening their economies.

Former New York Mayor and President Trump’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani, joined The Cats Roundtable to discuss the latest debate about how the country is meeting the moment, why China needs to answer for its misinformation about the origin of the virus, and how partisanship has injected itself into the crisis.

Giuliani told The Cats Roundtable that he hoped the decisions of governors, like Georgia’s Brian Kemp, to restart some businesses with standards in place to combat the virus, would also be heeded by states like New York.

“We got to get our economy going again,” the former New York City mayor said. “Otherwise a lot more people are going to die from the cure than from the illness.”

With the recent pressure on the EU to soften criticism of its pandemic response, China has shown it is actively rewriting the history of COVID-19. Giuliani did not shy away from criticizing China and the misinformation out of Wuhan, the region where the virus was first reported in early December 2019.

“There’s some very strange things that have to be looked at very carefully,” Giuliani told The Cats Roundtable, raising the theory that the virus was weaponized in a laboratory in Wuhan, possibly with the knowledge and even funding from U.S. officials.

“I don’t want to make any accusations,” Giuliani said, “but there was more knowledge about what was going on in China with our scientific people than they disclosed to us when this first came out.”

Giuliani also criticized Democratic politicians in the Obama administration, such as former Secretary of State John Kerry and former Vice President Joe Biden, for overlooking the U.S.-ties to the laboratory, adding that if he was the U.S. attorney, he would “open an investigation into the Wuhan laboratory” and figure out who in the Obama administration was involved.

He also railed Joe Biden’s campaign against Trump in the 2020 Presidential Election, telling The Cats Roundtable that Biden is an opportunity for China.

“The Chinese look at Joe Biden being interviewed…they see a guy who can’t finish his sentence, they see a guy who has gone around saying they’re not a threat,” Giuliani said.

He also commented on the apparent partisanship behind the release of certain high-profile prisoners who testified against Trump or were involved in the Mueller investigation, such as Michael Avennati and Michael Cohen. Both have been temporarily released due to risks from COVID-19.

“One thing you can’t have in this country is fooling around with the system of justice—you can’t have that,” he said.
