Democratic gaffs could spell new hope for Republicans in 2022, former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, told The Cats Roundtable this Sunday.
“As people look at what a Biden administration and what the democrats in the House and Senate are trying to do, I think you’re likely to see a very dramatic shift away from them,” Gingrich said with conviction.
Gingrich’s optimism of 2022 came despite the mounting struggle between Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and former President Trump, which he believes were a no-contest with Trump’s overwhelming support by the Republican base, and said the fighting wouldn’t last “very long.”
“What’s very striking is that President Trump still has such enormous reach in the party that nobody can fight him,” Gingrich told The Cats Roundtable.
The dissonance between career Republicans in Washington and the majority Trump base had led to serious consequences for the GOP’s legislative power, Gingrich explained. But Gingrich also pointed to Republican leaders like McCarthy who practice the unity they preach. He believed a combination of rejection of democratic policies and a strong GOP would change the status quo.
“I fully expect next year that despite the skirmishes and the noise, and people like McConnell and Trump yelling at each other, that the net result is going to be a very substantial republican gain,” Gingrich told The Cats Roundtable. “Because the democratic policies are so far to the left and so dishonest that I think people are just going to repudiate them.”
2022 is a year Republicans need, particularly with the loss of the Senate majority. While gaining seats in the House in the 2020 election, Gingrich believed the Georgia run-off election, which saw the election of two Democratic Senators, had been decided by the Republican Senate’s failure to act on Trump’s request for stimulus checks.
“When President Trump proposed the extra 2 thousand dollars, for the Senate Republicans not to pass it, virtually guaranteed we were going to lose the two seats in Georgia,” Gingrich concluded, and while he was confident in the party’s ability to counter-punch in 2022, those gains had to be made in light of “a real gamechanger.”
But one doesn’t have to look far to observe the shortcomings of Democrats, according to Gingrich. After historic winter storms and freezing temperatures rolled across the South, Gingrich railed against Biden’s executive decisions, such as the one that ended the Keystone pipeline, that seemed to be carried out “at the very moment you have this energy crisis in Texas.”
Democratic policies seemed to be trying to “defy the law of gravity,” Gingrich told The Cats Roundtable, but the gravity of the consequences is undeniable. The former speaker pointed to a litany of democratic mishaps and mishandling, including the $32 billion pandemic unemployment fraud in California and New York Governor Cuomo’s cover-up of nursing home deaths.
Gingrich feared the partisanship around the pandemic would also succeed in shutting down states that have attempted to thrive despite the pandemic, states that have Republican governors, such as Florida, Texas, and South Dakota.
As for US foreign policy, and border security, the catch-22’s abounded. While Biden has promised to undo Trump-era immigration policy and promised citizenship to millions of migrants, Democrats had simultaneously built a permanent fence around the US Capitol building.
“They are protecting the Capitol from Americans while they’re tearing down the wall to protect the United States,” Gingrich said. “It tells you really how strange all of this stuff is getting.”
